Peace in the Park

An Annual Celebration of Collaboration and Creativity for Youth

Kids as Peacemakers sponsored its fourth annual Peace in the Park event on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at the Bartlet Mall in Newburyport, MA.

The three-hour program of entertainment and crafts for families upheld a theme of cooperation and freedom from violence. Children and teens provided most of the entertainment under the leadership of community organizations in the Greater Newburyport area.

E. J. Oulette's Whole Music Artist Review anchored the live music program for the day. In addition to E.J.'s young musicians and vocalists, several other organizations contributed their talents: the Bracken School of Irish Dance, Greg Coles African Dance and Drum, and the River Valley Charter School gave performances and offered some basic instruction to the audience. Members of Newburyport's Congregation Ahavas Achim demonstrated and led an Israeli circle dance with enthusiastic audience participation.

Visitors to the Kids as Peacemakers activity booth created a new mural during the event. The traditional four by eight sheet of plywood (right) began as a blank "quilt" with squares. Each young painter created a unique personal peace sign in one of the squares.

Peace in the Park began in Newburyport in 2008, timed to coincide with the UN International Day of Peace and the World Council of Churches' International Day of Prayer for Peace.
